The Versova Beach Cleanup: Afroz Shah’s Global Environmental Movement

Afroz Shah, a lawyer from Mumbai, began cleaning Versova beach in 2015. Starting with one neighbor, he built the world’s largest beach cleanup, removing thousands of tons of plastic and inspiring global movements. His work restored wildlife, brought turtles back, and showed how one person can spark change.

In 2015, Afroz Shah, a lawyer from Mumbai, went for a walk on Versova beach. What he saw on the beach left him disturbed. There were heaps of garbage over the sand. He witnessed plastic bottles, food wrappers, rotting waste, old shoes, and broken glass everywhere. The water looked dark and dirty, and the rotting smell made it hard to even stand there. Families who once came for walks stayed away. Children could no longer play by the shore.

Instead of feeling helpless, Afroz felt a sense of duty. On October 2015, he picked up a pair of gloves, grabbed a bag, and started cleaning the beach. His 84-year-old neighbour, Harbansh Mathur, joined him. Together, they picked up trash one piece at a time.

A Date with the Ocean

Afroz called his weekly cleanups “dates with the ocean.” Every Saturday and Sunday, he came back with gloves and bags. Slowly, more people noticed. School children, fishermen, shopkeepers, college students, and office workers began to join him. Volunteers even came from nearby slums. Over time, lawyers, Bollywood stars, and politicians joined too.

The group worked under the hot sun and heavy rains. Sometimes, they pulled out plastics buried deep in the sand. Other times, they lifted large objects—sofas, broken furniture, even car parts. The work was tough, and new waves often brought more garbage. But Afroz and his team never gave up.

n just 21 months, volunteers removed 11,684,500 pounds of garbage—that is about 5,300 tons—from Versova beach. They also cleaned drains and public toilets near the beach. They planted coconut trees to make the area green again. What started as two people had turned into the world’s largest beach cleanup.

The most magical moment came in 2018, when Olive Ridley turtles returned to Versova beach for the first time in decades. These turtles had stopped nesting there because of the trash. That year, 80 hatchlings crawled to the sea. Since then, turtles have kept coming back.

It was proof that nature heals when given a chance. Birds, crabs, and small fish also began to thrive. Versova beach slowly transformed from a garbage dump into a living shoreline again.

Awards and Recognition

The world began to notice Afroz Shah’s work. In 2016, he was named a UN Champion of the Earth, one of the highest environmental awards in the world. He was praised by leaders, media outlets, and global organizations. The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) called the Versova cleanup the largest beach cleanup in history.

Inspiring Global Movements

Similar movements were created by Afroz Shah’s work both in India and elsewhere. Cleanups were initiated by citizens in Kerala, Chennai, and Delhi. Afroz started focusing on river cleanup and urban plastic usage reduction. He always says that this is not just about cleaning trash. It is about changing mindsets. If people stop littering and start caring for their environment, beaches and rivers will stay clean for good.

The Versova beach cleanup is more than an environmental story. It is a story of hope, persistence, and faith in humanity. Afroz Shah began alone, but his passion made thousands follow. Today, Versova beach is cleaner, turtles are back, and people around the world are inspired.

His journey shows us that the fight against plastic pollution is not hopeless. It starts with one hand picking up one piece of trash. If we all follow that, we can protect our oceans, our wildlife, and our future.
