Early Life

Tessy Thomas—The Missile Woman of India—was born in April 1963 in a small town called Alappuzha, Kerala. Her father was an IFS officer, and her mother was a homemaker. She was a curious child, asking questions about machines, the moon, and the stars. As her home was close to the Thumba rocket launching facility, it sparked her interest in rockets and space.

When Tessy was in her teens, her father had a stroke, leaving him paralyzed. Eventually, her mother, who was a teacher, became the breadwinner of the family. Tessy’s mother nurtured her interest in solid-state physics.

After schooling, Tessy studied electronics and communication engineering at the Government Engineering College in Thrissur, Kerala. She then joined Pune’s Defense Institute of Armament Technology to pursue her master’s in missile technology.

Journey into Missile Science

After completing her engineering, Tessy joined DRDO in 1988. She worked on guidance systems of the Agni missiles and became the Project Director for Agni‑IV. This is represented as a significant milestone in her career. She worked under Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who was then leading India’s missile programme. Under her leadership, the Agni-IV missile was successfully tested in 2012. This was a proud moment for India and for Tessy as well. Later in her career, she led the Agni-V project. These successes made her famous not only in India but also in other countries. She proved that women can excel in areas once thought to be only for men.

Inspiring the Nation

Tessy has received several prestigious awards for her work. In 2012, she received the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for Excellence in Public Administration, Academics, and Management. She also received the Agni Self‑Reliance Award for her leadership in missile development. She is the first woman in India to lead a missile project of this scale.

However, Tessy’s willingness to motivate others may be her greatest accomplishment. She often visits schools and colleges to talk to young people. She encourages girls to study science and engineering. She encourages young women to never limit their dreams.

Her story has broken stereotypes about women in science. She is also a role model for young girls in STEM. She once said, “If men can do, women can also do. There’s nothing that can stop us.” This powerful message reflects her belief that gender should never be a barrier to success.

A Legacy for the Future

Dr. Tessy Thomas continues to work in India’s defense sector. She leads important research and development projects. While shaping the next generation of missiles, she is also shaping the minds of young Indians who dream of working in science and technology.

Her life story is a message that no dream is too big. She grew up in a small town with limited resources and went on to become a person whose work protects the entire nation. Dr. Tessy Thomas’s life is a story of courage, hard work, and love for the country.
