India Fortifies Aerial Defence with Major Drone Initiative

In a significant move to modernize its armed forces, India is undertaking its largest-ever drone
exercise. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance the nation’s defence preparedness,
sign a new era in its military capabilities. The Defence Acquisition Council has approved a substantial
defence package valued at Rs 67,000 crore, which includes a landmark proposal to acquire 87 armed
Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) drones. This move underscores a strategic pivot towards
incorporating advanced, locally developed technology into the country’s defence framework.

Operation Impetus: The Lessons from Operation Sindoor

The urgency for acquiring these advanced unmanned systems was acutely felt during Operation
Sindoor. According to a senior official, this operation, which involved India’s retaliatory cross-border
strikes in May following the Pahalgam terror attack, highlighted the critical need for sophisticated
drone capabilities. The events underscored the necessity for persistent surveillance and precision
strike assets that can operate in complex environments with minimal risk to personnel.

A Strategic Shift in Modern Warfare

The large-scale integration of drones into the military marks a revolutionary change in India’s
strategic thinking. This shift is not merely about adding new equipment but about reimagining
military operations. The army is significantly scaling up its induction of drones, which are set to play
multifaceted roles. Beyond reconnaissance, these platforms, including large cargo drones, can be
used to support forces with essential supplies in difficult-to-reach areas, thereby transforming
logistical chains. According to Rakesh Sinha, the deputy chief of the integrated defence staff (operations), the global
military landscape is evolving rapidly. “The future of warfare will be shaped by an ongoing race
between drones and defence measures,” he stated. This perspective emphasizes that simply
possessing a drone fleet is not enough; a parallel investment in counter-drone technology is essential
to maintain a strategic advantage.

Fostering a Self-Reliant Defence Ecosystem

A core objective of this initiative is to bolster India’s domestic manufacturing capabilities and reduce its historical dependence on imported military hardware. Boost to Local Industry: The development and production of powerful, advanced drones demonstrate India’s growing proficiency in designing and building its own technology. This strengthens the entire domestic drone ecosystem. Economic Growth and Job Creation: By promoting local manufacturing, this defence push directly contributes to job creation and adds significant value to the Indian economy. This approach is in perfect alignment with government initiatives aimed at encouraging domestic drone production.

The Critical Role of Counter-Drone Technology

As India expands its own drone capabilities, it simultaneously recognizes the imperative of defending
against similar threats from adversaries. The development of sophisticated systems like the
“Bhargavastra,” a counter-swarm drone system, is a crucial component of national security. Such
technologies are vital for effectively neutralizing potential drone-based threats. Sinha reinforced this
by noting that nations investing in robust counter-drone systems will gain a decisive strategic edge.
He further stressed that “Counter-drone technologies must evolve continuously to address not only
current but also future drone capabilities”.

The Path Forward: A Strategic Balancing Act

This significant investment raises a critical question for India’s defence planners: Should the focus be
primarily on drones and autonomous systems, or should it be balanced with strengthening
traditional air force capabilities? The current strategy suggests a hybrid approach, where unmanned
systems augment and enhance the effectiveness of conventional forces, creating a more resilient and
technologically advanced military prepared for the challenges of the 21st century.
